Have you ever found yourself in the middle of a book and suddenly realized that you have no clue what was written on the last few pages? It’s easy to let our minds stray while reading; but reading is of little value if we do not comprehend what we have read.
Children need to have a good understanding of the text they are reading. Retelling is an excellent way to ensure a child has comprehended what they read. Students need to understand story elements (part of a story) in order to properly retell a story. Including the setting, main characters, and plot, can help ensure they adequately comprehend their reading.
During Guided Reading each group read a text and completed a graphic organizer to identify the story elements. The students used their story map to write a retelling. Later, each group met with Mrs. Hand and wrote a script of their retelling. She videoed the groups retelling their stories. Ask your child about the GREEN SCREEN they used!
